Financial services companies in São Paulo, Brazil

The Receita Federal (CNPJ registry) lists 174,016 financial services companies (banks, credit, fintech, insurance and brokers) in São Paulo, of which 174,016 are active. With 37.3% of Brazil's section K records, São Paulo is the largest of the country's 27 states for this sector (extraction 2026-10-10). The sector is over-represented here: section K is 5.5% of all records in São Paulo against 4.3% nationally, a location quotient of 1.29.

The city of Sao Paulo concentrates 53.3% of the active companies, followed by Osasco (6,526) and Campinas (5,027); the three together hold 59.9%. The median active company is 5.3 years old; 16% were registered in the last year and 36% in the last three. In the 12 months to September 2026, 27,705 new financial services businesses were registered in São Paulo, +55.6% on the previous 12 months (national section K: +53.8%). By ISIC division, 64 (financial service activities, except insurance and pension funding) is 74.6% of the records and 66 (activities auxiliary to financial service and insurance activities) 24.1%. Size is known for 26% of the active companies; 72% of those are micro.

The operating institutions are a minority of this section: holding companies (ISIC 6420) and investment funds and trusts (6430) make up most of division 64 in Brazil, Chile and Peru.
